Barb Mosher for CMSWire.com - April 28, 2008

We often bring you news of financial successes and troubles of content management vendors in the industry. This time, happy cheers come from a related product line — online HTML editor tools — produced by Ephox. With the line up of integration partners, it’s no wonder they are doing well.

Ephox produces a browser-based authoring tools called EditLive!. These tools provides rich content authoring capabilities for even the most technically challenged. They are embedded into some of the most advanced WCM products on the market today including, Vignette, Stellent, EMC Documentum and Percussion. Now that’s pretty impressive!

With this in mind, it’s no wonder Ephox has announced a record-producing fiscal quarter ending March 31, 2008. Their sales have grown by more than 200% over the same quarter a year ago. Now we can’t tell you what that means exactly because they don’t give actual numbers. But it does sound good doesn’t it?

Ephox EditLive! products are Word-like authoring tools that is used in content management systems and wikis. From the look of it’s feature set, it’s the most comprehensive tool we’ve seen to date.

According to Ephox, “User adoption is a critical issue as many organizations move to a self-publishing environment where content creators have to create and publish rich content with no help from the IT department.” They are definitely in the right market.

Ephox Achieves Record Revenues and Profits in Q1 2008

Wide-Scale Customer Deployments Drive Rapid Growth in Revenues

SAN MATEO, CA and BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA—(April 23, 2008) - Ephox, the leading provider of authoring software for web content management (WCM), announced its best ever performance for the fiscal quarter ending March 31, 2008. The company's success validates its strategy of maintaining and expanding its position as the leading authoring tool for the leading WCM platforms.

Ephox's Q1 sales have grown by more than 200% over the same quarter a year ago. The company has added over 100 new customers in the past year. Ephox's software is used by thousands of small and large customers in a variety of industry verticals. Ephox has strong partnerships with leading WCM vendors including IBM, EMC, Vignette, Oracle, Percussion, and others.

"Many of our new customers are household names and it is exciting to see our software being used to power their internal and external web sites," said Ephox CEO Andrew Roberts. "As we accelerate our revenue growth, we plan to invest more in product development and expand our sales and marketing efforts."

Ephox's management believes that the company has a unique opportunity for future growth. $2.9 billion is spent each year on content management initiatives that often fail to deliver on their initial promise because of poor business user adoption. User adoption is a critical issue as many organizations move to a self-publishing environment where content creators have to create and publish rich content with no help from the IT department. Ephox's EditLive! is the only browser-based product that enables non-technical users to easily contribute rich content to a website.

Ephox gets wings

This past quarter was truly fantastic for us as we almost tripled our sales from the same quarter a year ago. We have added over 100 new customers in the past year and more than twice that number in repeat customers. Our resellers and partners add many more thousands of companies and hundreds of thousands of users.

Many of our new customers are household names and it is exciting seeing them using our software to power their web sites. In just the past few months our customers have included Red Bull (energy drinks), ANZ (Australia’s third largest bank), AHold (a $30B Dutch supermarket company), Generali (an insurance company with over 60,000 staff), Tupperware (famous for their parties) and a healthcare company with over 150,000 staff.

The past few years have seen us grow by 30-40% each year – a commendable achievement for a bootstrapped company that has not taken any venture capital and funded growth internally. However, our recent 100%+ growth has put that performance in perspective. We are now doing about as much business in a three-month period as we did in the whole of 2005.

In my humble opinion, web content management gets a much-needed usability and productivity boost from the innovations that our team work on each day. Here’s a salute to the good work that they do and a call to action for all of the good things that we know we need to do in the future!

Quarterly Product Update Recording Now Available

Recently we held the first of our quarterly product updates and while we had a great turn out on the call, plenty of people couldn't make it. For those people, we're providing the recorded version below.

To answer a couple of common questions we got, you can request a fix pack from Vignette which includes an update to EditLive! 6 so you an access the features we demo. Additionally, the track changes data that EditLive! creates is stored directly in the HTML as an XML block so it gets stored and versioned with the rest of the HTML. It's designed to render in browsers as if all the changes had been accepted so you can see what the final intent was as this generally works best with version history systems. More information on the track changes data format is available on LiveWorks! and in the EditLive! SDK.

If you have any further questions please get in touch and we'll be happy to help out.
