Busted by the Brand Police
As I was sipping my second cup of coffee and browsing one of our competitor’s websites, I came across several content errors.

I smelled blood.
I went hunting and found even more errors! It was actually pretty darn fun finding errors on someone else’s website (instead of my own). I can imagine how embarrassed their marketing team would be if they knew.
Then, I had one of those self reflection moments and thought “Oh sh_! What if our site has a bunch of content errors? How would we know?”
I pulled my team into a meeting and asked if anyone has gone through our website for content errors. One brave soul raised her hand and said, “The authors use spell check in the content management system.” I replied, ”But what if they forget?” I was answered with “umms” and “hmms”.
So I told my team to make sure our website is clean.
TIME TO GET REAL
By making content accessible and correcting spelling errors and broken links, you are ensuring your visitors experience clean content that doesn’t detract from your website.
There are a number of free tools available online to check content for accessibility, spellchecking and link checking. They evaluate the pages on your web properties for errors and highlight them for you. (I recommend checking out Firefox Accessibility Extension)
The UNDERCOVER CMO’s BOTTOM LINE
For me, the last thing I want is errors all over our website. At the end of the day, I’m paid to protect the reputation of the brand!
